Dear New Jersey,I hope all is well. In fact, I hope things have improved ... with being ... New Jersey and all.
I just wanted to drop you a note about a a new friend of yours. It seems one of your teams, the New York Football Giants, signed former Dallas Cowboy and general cut-up and tight end Martellus Bennett to a one-year, $2.5 million contract for 2012.
Good. Luck. With. All. That.
Trust me, on paper this looks fantastic. No. Wait a sec. On paper, this looks terrible. Bennett's been in the league four seasons and has totaled 85 catches and 846 yards. For a 6-6, 270-pound target on a pass-happy offense, at the very least, you'd think the numbers would be inflated.
They aren't. OK. So yous guys can surmise that Bennett was blocked by Jason Witten and was perpetually in pass protection because the Cowboys' offensive line was so bad. I mean, if anyone knew this, it was fans of the New York Giants!
No. This is not reality. Bennett marches to the beat of a drummer somewhere in Antartica. He's a weird, refreshing dude. If he's not playing for your football team, he's a YouTube delight. On the roster, and he's a disaster. It's been hard to find what motivates him. Witten or no, pass protection or no, Bennett's been a non-factor in Dallas because he's unfocused and seemingly dumb. He makes mistakes. He's never garnered the trust of Tony Romo and, thus, he's hardly targeted. If he is, a fumble or dropped pass typically ensues.
Trust me on this one.
The good news, none of this seems long term. Jake Ballard will return. This is a one-year deal with a bare amount of money involved. Bennett can be efficiently expunged when the time needs.
Or, maybe coming to the world champion Giants will be what Bennett needs. Maybe no one on the Cowboys -- Romo, Jones, Jones' money, iPhone money, Cap'n Crunch, his weiner -- could motivate Bennett quite like two-time Super Bowl winner Eli Manning, red-faced Tom Coughlin or those guys on the roster.
The threshold for foolishness is low in New Jersey. If anyone needs a warning, it might be Bennett.
