Worst possible scenario in a three-day, three-game stretch up the West Coast for the Dallas Mavericks.0-3. And no hope, no signs of life.
Phoenix Suns 96, Dallas Mavericks 94
Sacramento Kings 110, Dallas Mavericks 97
Golden State Warriors 111, Dallas Mavericks 87
Total record: 49-68.
It's another third-quarter collapse (Phoenix), a total coaching ass-whipping (Sacramento) and a total meltdown (Golden State).
Dallas is playing with one arm tied behind its back and shoestrings tied together. Jason Kidd and Brendan Haywood -- despite their relative ineffectiveness when in -- are injured. Typical bench stalwarts -- Dom Jones, Jason Terry, Ian Mahinmi -- are pressed into starting service. Terry, Vince Carter and Lamar Odom are terrible.
Going 2-8 in last 10 have put the Mavericks in eighth in the Western Conference, a mere 1.5 games out of ninth and two games out of 10th. Now, I have no faith in Portland, Phoenix or Minnesota (sans Rubio) can make a run. But you never know.
Either way, it's one thing to lose. It's another thing to look lifeless. The Mavericks look lifeless. Folks act like dropping to eighth is the main problem. No, it's the way they've lost.
Friday night Rick Carlisle had his balls chopped off by whomever is is coaching the Kings. They started with a small line-up: Three guards with Tyreke Evans at the three. Blew the Mavericks out of the water. The speed was too much and the Mavericks were unwilling or unable to adapt and they died.
Last night, in Oakland, the Mavericks simply had their asses whipped into submission. You could not tell who the better team was.
What's killing this team is depth, especially in the frontcourt. Power forwards and centers are tearing the Mavericks apart. David Lee was the latest culprit. The drop-off from Tyson Chandler to Brendan Haywood was huge. The drop-off from Haywood to Mahinmi and Sean Williams is gigantic.
Then the guys the Mavericks hoped would solidify this line-up are gone.
Lamar Odom is shooting 34 percent and grabbing three rebounds a game since his sabbatical.
Vince Carter is shooting 29 percent from the field in March and 25 percent from behind the three-point arc in March. His shooting numbers have dropped from 46 percent in January and 42 percent in February.
It's a mess.
